Traditional Marian devotion • Prayed at morning, noon, and evening
The Angelus recalls the Incarnation, when the Word was made flesh. It is traditionally prayed three times daily, often marked by the ringing of church bells. The devotion invites us to pause, remember the humility of Mary, and give thanks for God’s saving plan.
Each versicle recalls Gabriel’s message to Mary and her response of faith, culminating in the Word made flesh.
Traditionally prayed at 6am, 12pm, and 6pm, the Angelus sanctifies the day and draws us back to God in thanksgiving.
In many places, the ringing of the Angelus bell invited everyone — farmer, worker, or child — to stop and pray together.
V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary…
V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R. Be it done unto me according to thy word.
Hail Mary…
V. And the Word was made flesh. R. And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary…
Let us pray.
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
